Yes gents, this is what puzzled me and prompted my initial post - although what was going on in my mind was converting to true c-p biasing with multi-Meg grid-return and a small cap on input. I can understand that.

My application would involve use only with high impedance/high output vintage variable reluctance cartridges playing 78s & pre-Sixties vinyl.
