I have been playing around with tranny output coupling on preamps as per some suggestions from close audio friends who I find to be a very good source of info on many, many things to do with audio. I also listen to what others as well have to say and make my decisions on trying things based on logic and the such. I was at a friends house the other day and he had a 211 amp built by J.C. Morrison. He used no coupling caps. He used tranny, after tranny, after tranny, and then some. The sound was real good but I always thought trannies and chokes brought some of their own baggage with them. I have no idea what the baggage is but another close friend and tech(whom I have a lot of repsect for) said to me that if trannies were a good thing then why are some of the most expensive amps ands preamps made for the mainstream market all cap coupled with few if no chokes in the power supply? I then proposed this theory to all of you to answer being that I have no idea where or when. I do know for myself that whenever I used a tranny on the output(of good quality of course) the results were always rewarding. But again, if a good cap coupled amp or preamp were built then maybe the results would be rewarding as well. I built a Loesch circuit phono with the ability to switch between cap output and tranny output. The tranny won hands down but then again, maybe I'm using marginal or poor quality caps. I am using Russian K-40 0.1UF/400VDC caps on the in between stages and some paper in oil on the output but once I installed the tranny the sound was much better.
