FWIW I thought the best sounding rooms (in no particular order) were the Pure Audio/QUAD(322), Salk/VanAlstine(318) and Marantz/Snell(306). Unfortunately, I didn't get to hear the Classic Audio Reproductions exhibit cause they'd just smoked one of the Atmosphere amps as I walked in. Love that burnt phenolic smell but a bummer otherwise.
Steve.Did you actually hear the VanAlstine Salk at the AK fest? That was the setup I was referring to and that was HORRIBLE! Frank had signaled me to come in from outside and he started talking about the phase coherence cancellation factor and I got up after 4 minutes and he said,where you going? I told him I would be back with a friend.I couldn't take it..I suppose the Sauks may have been good with nice tube gear,but those weren't even listenble after comming from the quad room and the Classic audio room..I was spoiled apparently.

It doesn't matter how you stir
