You noted: "The Quad room was packed all day and the 2905s are a speaker to be reckoned with..Those things were even running on the quad solid state electronics and they had a pair of antique soundlabs tube amps off the to the side but being quad was paying for the room, the dealer had to comply."Actually, the reason the QUAD electronics were being used was that they sounded best when the room was being set up and fine tuned. The other electronics were tried and relegated to display service. This may not always be the case but for this room at this show the QUAD equipment performed best. Don't ask how I know this but it be the truth ;-)
While overall I tend to agree with your observations, it's my opinion that this year's fest was the best yet, small rooms and all. The previous venue was a dump and an unpleasant distraction from the exhibits.
FWIW I thought the best sounding rooms (in no particular order) were the Pure Audio/QUAD(322), Salk/VanAlstine(318) and Marantz/Snell(306). Unfortunately, I didn't get to hear the Classic Audio Reproductions exhibit cause they'd just smoked one of the Atmosphere amps as I walked in. Love that burnt phenolic smell but a bummer otherwise.
One last observation: The use of female vocalists for demos was rampant and IMO didn't really show off the capabilities of the systems. I mentioned this at a few of the exhibits and at least one exhibitor commented that he expected more showgoers to have their own music with them (apparently, most did not). I've learned my lesson. Next year I'll be sure to bring my own music.
