Hi,

Yes, it can be done with a 27. In 1998 I built a Type 227, AC coupled to a UTC A-18, to P-P 2A3s in deep class A1. Amp sounded nice with a good set of low DCR supplies, one for each stage, each supply double series tube regulated.

Where you run into real problems is that there really isn't enough gain with a Type 227 (yeah, I used mesh plate globe 227s). Of course, the amp passes a signal OK, but the "jump factor" is missing. The amp is somewhat lethargic.

From my experience as of today, I would never do a 227 - 2A3 two stage combo again. I now would think a mu equals 40 or 50 is the minimum gain you can possibly use, and a mu equals 70 to 100 would be ideal but demanding in its implementation, as far as optimizing the amp's presentation in terms of jump factor.
