Well I saw some nice stuff today but it wasn"t as good as last year because last year had larger rooms..The Quad room was packed all day and the 2905s are a speaker to be reckoned with..Those things were even running on the quad solid state electronics and they had a pair of antique soundlabs tube amps off the to the side but being quad was paying for the room, the dealer had to comply.
Anyway they were superb and they were saying with tubes, they are another cut and a half above what they were on the SS electronics..You couldn't get comfortable in the room because it was so packed. But the sound was the best in the show as were the classic audio field coils.I wanted to hear the quads on tubes tho.
The pair of field coil horn speakers and field coil woofers running on atmospheres. Those were the classic audio reproductions and they were 18,500 and truthfully they were beautiful and a bargain when you think about the price field coils start at in japan.
Then Doug's amps were wonderful..I wanted to put those babies on the quads..These amps had power transformers and chokes that looked like they came out of an aux FM station transmitter. They were too heavy to move but what a feat of engineering that went into those with the Heyboer altec transformers..Then Kegger had a nice amp he had built that sounded very nice even on the polks.
I heard an audionote 300b stereo amp that was pretty large and I listened to that for 4 minutes and thats all I could take of that..Maybe it was the setup but it just didn't do anything for me..The other system that didn't do anything for me was the van alstine..Frank motions me to come in and listen and this was so compressed that I had honestly heard systems with Denon receivers that bested these. It was solid state stuff that looked like old hafler amps.
Now the new mcintosh 300 tube amps were a treat. They sounded very nice for such a high powered amp and even the mac speakers have come a long way..I did however like Roger Russell's line array system run on the mc275 last year and this year they were running it on a custom built amp with James transformers I think..They did sound very nice.
Then they had these speakers made in california that cost 1200 pair and they were like 4.5 inches wide and that deep and about 3 feet tall..They went down to 35 hz with NO sub and they really were a nice little speaker
