Basically I wanted a to build a modern SRPP design, utilize a high quality PCB board, and run a circuit with no negative feedback. Jim Hagerman's Clarinet kit is a superb starting point. All I had to do is substitute a stepped attenuator for the volume pot, upgrade the resistors and capacitors and sit back and smile.
There are a bunch of kits and some well priced commercial preamps out there. What I learned from building my own has been very educational and I would not trade that experience for any price.
No preamp is perfect so lets not go down that road. System matching is everything so one preamp might make a splash in one system and sound dull and boring on another.
If you are willing to spin up your own magic and have a cool 1000 dollars US to spend, then you can copy my Clarinet build and get some very serious sound.
I play Violin, Viola and Piano. I have enjoyed playing music as an amateur and I value gear that sounds like the real thing. High fidelity is more important to me than High End if you catch my drift.
The Clarinet sounds superb in every way, it meets and exceeds my expectations, and I have never had so many grins listening to my recordings as I have today.
I hope your search has a similar happy ending.
Cheers!
