Just recently purchased a Emotive Prima used and it came with a 5R4 retifier instead of the specified 5y3. I pulled the bottom of the unit and it lookes as if everything is original. Other than builing louspeakers and crossovers and working retail in audio before cd's I have not had much experience in DIY electronics. I know my way around fuel injection controls and computors so test equip is not foreign.
I pulled the 5r4 out and measured voltage at the different pins to possibly gain an idea what voltage the rectifier is being run at. On two of the pins I got 58 volts so I determined this was the voltage being rectified. In looking at the data sheets for the different tubes thus is at the bottom end of the value of the 5y3 and wat too low for the 5r4. What is this doing for the sound? I have been told that the "tone" will be way off with the 5r4 but I do not know what that means. My NOS tubes will be here in about a week but I could take the drive tomorrow to Angela Instruments and pick up a Sylvania 5y3 if it will make a big difference.
