I agree with JefferyJ on the tube socket! A bad tube socket drove me crazy trying to repair an old Fender Bassman amp. Triple-checked every component, all were in spec, found a bit of not-so-good wire in the B+ line, rewired it, still, one tube would get hotter than all the others. I had even cleaned all the tube sockets, no dice. It had to come out, and have a new one. Problem solved (after 2 weeks mind you).
And, speaking of things that "never go bad", I traced a DC offset for DAYS in an Acurus solid state power amp, finally started pulling one leg up on every component, one at a time, to check them "out of circuit". I started with the obvious ones, which was a mistake, as it happened to be the LAST one I left in place, a silver-mica capacitor. Somehow, it had shorted itself, but still had 1kohm of resistance.
Oddly, finding it was a relief, I thought I was losing my touch!
