Other than the sound, there is another good reason for a interstage. You can run a GM70 at about 950v, and with a 7k transformer get a good 35w or so, but to do that you need to swing into A2, that can be done with a good driver stage (say 300b) and an interstage. The other op point to get that power with cap coupling and that sort of power needs about 1300v. That extra 350v will probbaly cost as much to do well as the interstage.

I am not advocating throwing money away, but if cutting cost is important maybe a GM70 isn't the best choice.
