I've tried a WA 7ES which is just like the 8ES but can only record on one deck (299, and 399 pricewise) I own a WA 9ES. The 7 has pretty loud solenoids when switching ff and rewind etc., the 9ES has a silent mechanism as quiet as a Nak and is competitive in sound quality to the KA 3Es highend Sony deck. The 7ES dubbing deck had pretty good snap and dynamics for any deck in the $300 price range but if you are an audiophile you can here a big increase in smoothness and imaging on tapes made on 9ES when played in the car or another deck. The 9 on good type 2 or metal tapes is quite impressive even when used a dubbing deck. Ofcourse this is all dependent on the condition of the deck but the 9ES had been incredibly durable.
