Tape Trail

Yikes! A reel to reel that played perfectly fine now wavers in and out. What happened??

It's very strange, but about 5 minutes in the sound now fades in and out about every second, for a good 3 minutes. I can't remember anything unusual happening the last time I played it, and I don't stop the tape during play or speed rewind. I frantically went through about 3 other previously played tapes and they were fine. I can't figure this out but I don't want it to happen again. Any advice would be appreciated.
