So you're saying that the deck works when in play mode but siezes up completely when the record is activated?

That makes no sense. Can you give us a little more info so that we might be able to better diagnose your problem? For starters, begin with the obvious: Do any of the tapes you are using have the record 'safety' notches punched out? If so, there's the problem. Cover them up with some scotch tape (leaving the inner half still exposed if it's a Type II or IV) and then try.
