Record 5 lots of the same ten seconds of music (rich with high frequency content) start with the bias at 8 O'clock (so to speak) and each time you record another ten seconds move the bias 2 hours further 'round clockwise (8 O'clock, 10, 12, 2 then finally at 4 O'clock.
Play the five segments back, keep a note of which is which (1, 2, 3, 4 and 5) and which ever piece sounds most natural to you is where to leave the bias. Make a note which setting it is for that type of tape so you know next time.
Better yet, pick-up a nice 3 headed Nakamichi on ebay. Doean't have to have auto-biasing, but it's so easy to set the bias with the manual biasing 3 headers. They are quite cheap these days and it'll sound a lot better than a 2 head auto-reverse Yamaha (I've owned three Yamaha tape decks and my Nakamichi's was huge improvement over them). Auto-reverse is quite a large compromise on transport reliability and performance unless you have the Dragon. Even the Nakamichi RX-505 had it's reliability issues.
