There's a single reel. The tape is taken from the inside, played, and deposited on the outside. Since the inside has a smaller circumference than the outside, and the reel turns as a unit, as the 8-track plays the tape is stretched, and stretched, and stretched, until eventually--pop! The tape breaks. And before it breaks, the tape stretches, shifting tones downward.
Blech!
