Early acetate tape can be hard and brittle, besides adding leader tape, do not fast forward or rewind and you will be fine.I have never had a tape break (after the first play) as I first apply leader tape and I never fast forward or rewind a 4 Track Reel to Reel tape, this way the tape always has an even pack. If there is a lot of blank tape on either side, I just put on an LP or cassette while waiting for the tape to play out. I intend to make my Reel to Reels last the rest of my life.
On audiophile Reel to Reels that are recorded only on one side I store them tails out and rewind completely before play without stopping. Then I play them, which gives them an even pack for storage.
Be kind to your reels and they will be kind to you!
