And to this engineer's credit, he says this machine really comes into its own with the HD setting and S-VHS tapes, 'blackened' of course(he says regular VHS is lousy by comparison). You'd have to know this guy...fussy old fart and all.;-) Anyway, he says to use 'Y' adapters from your input audio to the companion HD audio-on both channels. He said playback isn't critical and can be done on regular audio 'out'.

Like I said, I'm still playing, but this explains to me perfectly why VHS audio has always sounded so sweet. The machine itself is a little daunting(75lbs!), as I've had no studio experience editing and such. The manual is over two hundred pages and the engineer has kindly scanned what he thinks is most important to me and what I do with the front panel settings etc.

What we're talking about here is FM recording where each channel is slightly different from the other.
