Home Tape Trail

Reel to reel, cassette and other analogue tape formats.

My first...

Reel to reel was the Dokorder 8140 4-channels unit. I bought it used in 1978, which according to the owner he bought it brand new in 1975. It was a very competent recording machine especially if you utilize the 4-channel recording option on 7.5" IPS. As the matter of fact I did compare it to my friend's Marantsz RTR, sound wise they are very close, but the Marantz was more highly resolving. However, I would give the Dokorder the nod of being the quietest of the two during the FF and rewind operations.

Based on its history Dokorder were basically the high end market for Onkyo. BTW, they're very reliable machine as long as you maintained it well. I sold mine back in the 90's and it was still functioning well with no hiccups whatsoever.
