Home Tape Trail

Reel to reel, cassette and other analogue tape formats.

What the heck?

I just acquired 4 10" reels of tape. The boxes and reals are Maxell and TDK. The Maxell tapes are UD35-180, the TDK is LX35-180. All have 80' and 90's rock recorded on them.

Last night I listened to side A on one of them, then tonight went to listen to side B. When the recorder was started white powder sprayed out from the tape path. Upon checking the entire tape path is covered with the stuff.

I've read about black tape leaving a sticky residue on things, but have never run into this before. Anyone have had this happen, and if so what might be the problem?

While waiting for an answer you can find me cleaning the tape path.

Edited to add: all four tapes were in boxes in good shape, the reels in plastic bags. I assume they were those the tapes were originally shipped in. Further note: They were first recorded in the early 80's according to notes on the boxes. To my knowledge they haven't been played for at least six or seven years.
