Tascam question

Back in the 80s I recorded stuff on a Porta One... had decent results.
A few yrs back I got a Tascam 424 Mk 3 to hear it all and try to get it into wav/mp3 using Sound Forge. Results weren't all that that great ..sitll the stereo cassettes versions sound better than MODERN WORLD digital.

will try again, but I don't need all the bells/whistles of the 424 since I am not recording anything. Plus I need something small.

Would that little Tascam the Porta 02 or ones like it -- just saw one called MF P01 --would these be just as good for the purposes of mising 4 down to 2, whether onto cassette or into digital? Are the playback heads in the little Tascams as good as the ones in the bigger, more expensive ones, like the 424? I understand albums were done on 424s with good results(!) I am just amateur. I just want something smaller, simpler than the 424
thank
Bob B
