I couldn't agree more. Even when all the decks are decades old and most of the commercial tapes are even older. One of the best buys I ever made was Kara Chaffee's deHavilland 222 tapehead preamp. With my Otari modded to allow direct tapehead output, the 222 can help even more tapes become, as you say, magical.
