RE: XLR microphone recommendation, please

I would suggest a Behringer B-5. It requires phantom power, is about $80, but comes with both a uni and omni capsules to suit your needs. I own 4 of them and find them to be an excellent value.

If you need an external mic preamp and want to stay totally portable, I think that ART still makes a battery mic-pre that is pretty nice.

The other option which I use on occasion is a little Mackie 802 VLZ4 which is a great little mixer with 3 mic pres and 2 pairs of stereo line ins. This give you great flexibility in choosing ORTF when using 2 mics and you can adjust the stereo spread at will. You could also try the Decca Tree with L/R and Center mics if you and your budget so choose. A great budget mixing desk.

I also own a Mackie 1604, but use my little 802 even more.
