Those are analog recorders with excellent quality. I was mildly horrified to read of a high-end audio magazine using a HiFi VCR to demonstrate different phono cartridges at a trade show, because it would have been too difficult to set up the turntables and cartridges on-site.A used VCR could run as much as $20. Plan for a bottle of head cleaner and some chamois cleaning sticks. I've had to clean the heads on my old Hitachi a number of times, mainly after using it for recording live performances or DJ sets in dusty environments. Older VCRs may have issues with decaying belts and other rubber bits.
Obtaining early-generation open-reel tape recordings won't be easy. You might find some treasures in the vaults of schools and churches. Reel-to-reel decks are great display items, though.
