Home Tape Trail

Reel to reel, cassette and other analogue tape formats.

It depends.

How's that for a weaselly response? Seriously, I have bought many, many tapes on Ebay -- the only real source for great quantities of them -- for under 10 bucks that sold later for $100+. There's no rhyme nor reason for used tape prices. New ones are something else, in every sense of the term, going from $150 to $400 per reel (2-track, 15 inches per second, 10 1/2" reels).

On any given day there are 6,000 to 8,000 prerecorded tapes on Ebay. Most are, let's say, pretty crappy unless you have a thing for the music of Jim Nabors and Lawrence Welk. (Not that there's anything wrong with that, of course). But there are gems to be found, at moderate prices, if you have patience.

And you can always hit those yard sales and estate sales and make killings :-)
