The quarter-track head was too worn - it was a goner. Yes, head stacks come up cheap, but almost always have wear patterns that cause the tape to visibly "crawl around" the heads or cause ripples in the tape just in front of the heads (look with a flashlight.) The sonic difference between that and the post-relap is NOT subtle. I've become a huge JRF fan; they do great work and are really good to deal with.
Besides, I don't listen to quarter-track pre-recorded tapes. I use the deck for mix sessions I do for a few friends - send vocals to the deck for an old-school delay (and "tapiness") before sending to the plate plugin (no EMT 140 in the apartment, but the UA plugin is pretty good.) Someday I might buy one of the crop of 15ips half-track IEC recordings just to see how good they are.
