Home Tape Trail

Reel to reel, cassette and other analogue tape formats.

RE: So ... how much does it cost to get into tapes ...

I did it for about $1500 but that includes a fair amount of luck. Here's what I spent, including shipping, which is important, as big decks and carts are heavy:

Otari MX5050 B-II for about $250 and got lucky - it works
Roll-around cart for the deck $120
Parts and cable to make up XLR-to 1/4" ICs $50-60
Couple reels of ATR or RMGI tape: $120
New takeup reel: $60
MRL calibration tape: $140
Head re-lapping: $300 (for 3 heads; we junked the 1/4-track PB head)
Head demagnetiser (used): $60
Fancy-schmancy pinch roller: $90
Meter light bulbs, electrolytic caps, and other misc: $100-ish
O'scope for head alignment: $150
Service manual copy: $50

I like the Otaris because there are a ton of them out there, and many look like crap, which helps keep the price down. If you've got the space, an extra "parts machine" can be a great buy. The Technics 1500 is also good, but tend to be more expensive. I haven't heard any consumer decks I like, and anyway there were precious few consumer decks made that supported half-track, 15-ips, and EIA EQ.
