Bought a used Yamaha TC-511S (a decidedly bare-bones piece of hardware) ca. 1979. It served me - and later my parents - well for a couple of decades, but it did succumb to old age. The tapes I made on it way back when, though, still sound pretty good. They're eminently listenable.
I bought another one (OK, well... another THREE... of which I ended up keeping one) in recent years - mostly nostalgia-based, but also to enhance the Yamaha collection.
Pretty bare-bones under the hood...
As an aside, in eBAY's early days, I was a sucker for cheap things that looked cool to me. I bought this Yamaha (two-head) deck, a TC-1000, for 50 smackers. I'd NEVER seen nor heard of this model (and I was pretty attuned to all things Yamaha when it would've been new), so I couldn't resist. It's completely unremarkable albeit very attractive.
At least it's got two motors and more stuff under the hood than the TC-511S :-)
all the best,
