Yep... That is the key factor. The Naks had a narrower head gap than other decks, and the playback head gap on the 3-head models is narrower than the record head gap. Playing a Nak-recorded tape on a different brand deck, even a very good one, results in high frequency loss because you have a wider head gap reading a narrower track.

I have a Nak & use it mostly for playback. It's awesome as a player, and to record stuff you know will only be played back on a Nak. But if I wanted to record something that would be played back on other machines, I'd use my Tascam 122 for that reason.
