Anyone familiar with UHER rec/play head codes?

Hi everyone.

I bought a used UHER Royal Deluxe R2R a while back, the non-'C' version with built-in amp and speakers. The machine is in good shape mechanically and looks very good but the seller turned out to be a b*stard and lied about head condition.

I did manage to get some of my money back (not a lot unfortunately) and even a spare, unused playback head from him, but there's nothing else I can do for a number of reasons too long to go into here. I like the machine and had always wanted a R2R, so I would like to get it working properly. Right now channel balance and HF response are pretty poor, even with a new tape.

I put up a few pics of the heads which you can see here -

http://flickcabin.com/public/viewset/48571

The ones starting with 'mini-Repro' are of the playback head currently in the machine, the other ones of the recording head and the spare head, respectively.

I do notice that the playback head is less worn and was told that it might even have some life left - but the rec head is just gone.

The reason I am posting is that I did run into some listings of part #s for these machines, and I noticed that the spare head I have, which in this machine is a playback head, was used as a combination Rec-PB head in other UHER machines, namely the Variocord 263 Stereo (which is very similar to this one but with a two-head design) and a couple of the 'Report' units.

This is what I mean:

http://www.uher-service.de/Uher%20Variocord%20263%20Stereo.htm

That is the listing for the Variocord (two-head). It lists the head as:

1012321 Aufn. Wdg. Kopf 1/4 Spur (UKH 207) 4Spur mit Aufschrift UKH 207 - Widerstand 163 Ohm - Induktivität 133 mH - 152 uS - 296 RS

('Aufn. Wdg. Kopf' = Rec/PB head)

Now, if you've looked at the pictures, you'll see that my spare head is a UK 207.

Two other listings, these ones for the "4400 Report Stereo" and the "4400 Report Stereo IC" (not sure what the difference was between these?):

http://www.uher-service.de/Uher%204400%20Report%20Stereo.htm
http://www.uher-service.de/Uher%204400%20Report%20Stereo%20IC.htm

1021436 Kombikopf Aufn.-Wdg. 1/4 Spur (siehe 1012340 - UAR207)
[Rec/PB head!]

And then:

1012340 Wdg. Kopf 1/4 Spur (UAR207) oder (UK207)

This last one seems to say that UAR207 and UK207 are interchangeable or identical.

Finally, the listing for MY machine:

1012340 Wdg. Kopf 1/4 Spur (UAR207) oder (UK207) "4Spur mit Aufschrift Ukh 207 oder UKR 207"

So apparently UAR207, UK207, Ukh 207, UKR 207 are interchangeable. And while in my machine the head is used as a PB-only head, in others it is used as a combination Rec-PB head.

SO. I really don't want to spend more money on the machine right now, and heads are not exactly cheap on the 'Bay. The question would be, if anyone happens to know: could I use the spare playback head I have, which in other (similar) machines is also used for recording, as a replacement for the recording head on this machine?

I would really appreciate any kind of help.

Sorry for the long and long-winded message.

Cheers!

D
