Akai M8 pinch roller

a friend gave me 2 Teac RTRs and the Akai. I replaced the o-ring in the back and am going to clean the rest. The Akai which has be used a couple of times a year since new will go back to him until I replace belts and clean the Teac 4010SL which has been his house RTR and I get the Akai back. The pinch roller in the Akai is smooth on the top edge and very rough where it contacts the tape, vertical cuts/cracks. Is it supposed to be smooth top to bottom?
