It's easy enough to open the back, but I think all you'll see (that's useful) is the brake band. I suppose it's possible that it might have seized up, but I've never heard of that before. (Edit: Although, the brake bands DO need occasional adjusting or replacing... it might be time.)
Best to contact a Studer/Revox tech such as Steve Smith or others in the Nashville area. Steve was in Madison, TN about ten years ago when he fixed a couple things on my A77. He might not even be around anymore, but surely there are other guys in that area, since that's where Studer had their US headquarters. Google is your friend.
