I have had the Otari mx5050 B2II, Studer A807 and Studer A80 MKII. The Studer A80 sounds the best using stock electronics. The Studer A807 comes in second and also sounds great with stock electronics. The Otari mx 5050 is not in the same league and needs to have out board electronics to sound good. The Studer A80 still beats it with its stock electronics and better transport. I am sure the Studer units would sound even better with outboard electronics, however I can live with their stock sound. I kept both the Studer units.
