The Ampex ATR1 is an outgrowth of the original idea by Stevens. Ampex bought one of Stevens capstanless machines and tried to copy it but had to hire Stevens to come over to Ampex and explain the thing and then they designed the ATR. It's completely DC servoed. You can mount the reels both off center and it will correct completely. Awesome machine but parts are becoming scarce. The Studer A80 would be my second choice if you could find one that hasn't been abused. You want wide pole piece heads if you are running at 15 or 30 and Studer made the best heads. Ray
