Could well be one lousy tape. I had a similar experience with a TDK GX 35/90B, ordinarily one of my best sounding and most trusted tape formulations. This particular one not only squealed but flaked off tiny shards of oxide. The only others that squeal (routinely) on my Otari are some Quantegy 642s supposedly from the last batch that Quantegy produced.

I like the Maxells too.
