The main belt is likely your problem; typically, after 30 years it has stretched to the point that when you go to reverse play mode, it just falls off. I have plenty of new flat belts for the set, a little thinner and more supple than the original belt ( which when stretched are fine for use in the Pioneer RT-909 ). The replacement belt is a bit finicky / difficult to get it on, but once the proper size is in place, it stays for a decade or more.
