It's fairly common for the caps in control circuits to go bad with age and that can cause a lot of problems with switching between operating modes, for example, from stop to play or play to rewind. The charging time of the cap changes as it gets more leaky, and eventually the delay between modes hits infinity as the cap refuses to charge fully. Any chance the corrosion came from a fluid leak from the caps themselves?
