The thing about phase (polarity) is that many discs and tapes were recorded originally in "normal" polarity, many more in "inverted" polarity and still more in a mixture. For instance, I have one LP where I can bring the vocalist forward or recede him into the mix depending on where I have the polarity switch on my linestage. This is only an issue if you have polarity-coherent, minimal-crossover speakers anyway; otherwise you'll be hard-pressed to distinguish a difference. This has been much discussed in a number of other AA forums.

I have a feeling that much of the phase/polarity confusion originated in this Pin2/Pin3 disparity, but it's just a guess. In any event, I may rewire the XLRs or just use the polarity switch. Thanks for the historical background -- I wondered how it all started.
