Thanks for the help so far! I really am leaning towards a nice Otari, and perhaps saving more $ to get it.

I dug through the tapes from my childhood I had and there are actually 4 total. 3 are on 7" reels and one is on a 5" reel.

There are no markings my Grandfather made on the tapes to denote the speed he recorded nor whether in stereo or mono. The 2 Scotch tapes are double-sided, so the range of possibilities there (according to the box) are 1 7/8 ips, 3 1/4 ips, and 7 1/2 ips and then from there he could have recorded these tapes 1 track mono, 2 track mono, 2 track stereo and 4 track. So I guess my question here is:
A) Can you "trial and error" playing the tapes different ways until you find the correct speed and
B) Would say the Otari be able to to play them if say they were recorded 1 7/8 ips mono 2-track anyhow?

Finally, I noticed the Otari for instance takes 7" and 10" reels so how would I get the 5" reel onto say a 7" reel "safely" so it could be played? Sorry for the dumb questions!!!

Regards,
Joel
