Joel,
stick with the Otari 5050, or if you can find one an MTR-10. They can be had for around 500 on ebay. As Kevin mentioned the Tanbergs sound nice. I used to own two of them. They are not the most robust machines and as he mentioned, getting service is a pain. I had mine when the Tandberg serv. center was still open and their turn around time was usually 8-10 weeks. Finally sold them both. All parts are available for the later Otari 5050. there are 3 versions, Mk1, M2, and Mk3. try to shoot for a M2 or Mk3; quite a few worthwhile improvements over the Mk1.
And most of them have 1/4 track playback heads so will play back either half track or 1/4 track tapes. Keep in mind that the 5050 uses pin 3 as the hot pin, not pin 2, so you'll either need to make up a set of cables converting pin 3 to pin to or move the wires on the male jack on the deck.
If you are looking at consumer decks, there is a whole selection out there from Akai, Teac, Pioneer, etc.
John
