Ray gave you some great choices below. You are a bit handicapped with your $ limit, although so are most of us and especially when you consider a repair/calibration thrown in there at some point, which these older machines desperately need by now.I stupidly, chose to go Tandberg...they've just always done it for me. Parts are unobtanium etc, but there are techs around the states that still love and work with these decks-not talking about Soundsmith unless you're rich. One really sweet Tandberg, if you can find it, would be the TD-20A/SE...in two track, 7.5/15ips. Another stellar deck of theirs was the TD-10XD (with Dolby B), only made in 7.5/15ips, four track (two track was special order, making it even more rare). It was the model right before the TD-20A and was developed along with the 9100 series decks (I own a 9240XD). Only made a yr, kind of a rare bird, but I just bought one cheap. The next yr they dropped the 10XD and went with the 10X (no Dolby).
I've been watching the Tandberg page on ebay now for over two yrs...$500 would buy you one of those two recommendations and perhaps even one that's been recently serviced. The pejorative question on ebay though is always 'who' serviced the deck, chimps? As always caveat emptor....
***I had another thought since I first posted this....a lot of vintage restoration shops get 'stuck' with decks because the owner can't pay the repair bill (or doesn't want to). Sometimes, all they want is what they have into them-great deals there, if you can find them. Ask for pics if you're fussy about physical condition.
