Generally, the purists over at Naktalk prefer the CR-7a above all else...even the Dragon. The Dragon's auto playback head azimuth feature has some known problems. As much as I love Naks, those cheap, crummy little motors that run things give us all the worst grief. The Sankyo transports are the worst. some of them-versus the 'classic' transports.FWIW, the heads are rated for 10,000hrs and so I'd be feeding your deck the best metal tapes I could find. Something to the equivalent of Maxell MX-S.
Going from Nak to Nak decks is usually not a problem. I've been told by techs though, that when they measure speed accuracy with instruments, most Naks run a bit fast. I don't understand why Nak didn't go to quartz-lock speed control like the top-end Sony ES series decks, for example.
Hope your deck is everything as stated on fleabay....let us know. If not, I know some great techs.
