Signal path?

Hi to all,

Can any one explain?

"These components are in the singal path so I was told"

I'm new to this - To me a resistor reduce an X value due to the number of resistence. Say 50 volt goes into a resistor which is in the signal path and what come out could be 45 volt depending on the resistor.
Are you with me so far?
My volt meter read 45 volt and that's all I can see...same goes to other components on the PCB but with different function. For audio frequencies of 20Hz - 20KHz, what does this got to do with 45 volt display on my volt meter?

How do you identify these compontents are in the signal path?

Regards
DH
