Technical and speculative discussion of amps, cables and other topics.

The answer is 20 volts

Unfortunately, the question is, "If you wire a pair of expensive 100V 22,000uF capacitors backward and bring them up slowly on a variac, at what voltage will they fail?"

Yup, I'm refurbishing a Pioneer SX-1250 and replaced the big filter caps. Got two of them backwards, it turns out. $55 out the window. So why couldn't I have learned this lesson on a pair of $2 filter caps?

Anyway, another $55 later and the amp is working fine. Just need to clean up some incredibly dirty pots and switches.

So I guess the lesson is (based on a single data point that I fervently hope not to add to) that electrolytics fail at about -1/5 their rated voltage. REALLY glad I brought the beast up on a variac.
