the main reason for it is to eliminate the phase funnies that happen in the overlaps in the crossovers. but since crossover filters add phase shifts anyway (especially in their rolloff regions) it probably doesn't make that much of a difference. you would think that with all of the software design and modeling tools available that speaker designers would improve on this technique. the original idea behind this was that if the voice coils were in the same plane, the relative phase between the drivers would be zero, and there would be no phase funnies in the sound (and would reduce peaks and dips in the frequency response caused by phase cancellation). but the two fallacies with the idea are a)phase shifts in the crossover network, and b)it only holds true when listening or measuring on-axis.
