Is it worth using the 6dB attenuator?

in the EAD DSP-7000 Mk.III? Yes, this is an old D/A converter, but I'm still using it after having it heavily modified by Boelen Electronics. The one thing that I was never sure about, however, was how EAD implemented the so-called "necessary" 6 dB attenuation related to the inclusion of HDCD processing. I know some companies actually did it by not using whatever was built into the HDCD chip, but bypassed that and used their own discrete circuitry. Fortunately it's switchable in the EAD, but I still wonder how they did it and if they way they did it would be worth using (no degredation of the signal, no real effect on the sound quality, etc). Anybody know?
