I don't think you can :)

But it doesn't matter to me since there are two other ways that work for me:

1) IE shows links that have been read in a different color. I never read a thread in the threaded view: I always click on each response and then use the back button, that way every post that I've read shows up with a different colored link.

2) Similarly if you use one of the non-classic views (my favorite is the "Threads" view) there is a little Red triangle next to posts that I haven't read yet, vs. a little blue triangle next to the posts I have read.
