Howdy

At this time there isn't a way to get email whenever anyone posts to a thread.

With that in mind the downside of not responding to people directly is that they may not notice your response. BUT I wouldn't worry about it too much: most people who post will read new posts to a thread. There are plenty of people who do as you mention just respond to their original post.
