I have been buying on Audiogon for a number of years, and lately I have had nothing but bad experiences with dishonest sellers.
A couple weeks ago, I bought a pair of mono amps for a relative paid ($3,000 plus shipping) from a seller in east coast. They were described as being 8/10. When my relative got the amps, he called and told me they were damaged due to poor packing. I rushed over to his house, and I was shocked to see how poorly they were packed. They were each packed in a single cardboard box barely large enough to stick fingers in with no styrofoam, peanuts, bubble wrap or any other protection. Not surprisingly, one foot at the bottom of the amp got totally smashed, while a heatsink fin was bent among other minor damages.
When I first informed the seller of the damage, he sounded like a nice guy and willing to help remedy the situation. He asked for photos of the damage, which I sent him along with a photo of the packaging.
I didn't hear from the seller for a few days, and when I finally did, I could not believe what I was reading! He says he thinks the damage may have occurred due to poor unpacking; ie, we did not take the amps out of the box properly! In my 7 years of buying and selling on Audiogon, I have come across many sellers, mostly decent, but I have never seen a guy blaming a buyer for a poor unpacking!
As a seller, I have also had misfortunes of having gears damaged on the way, but I have always been fair. I offered this seller of two options.
1. I will ship back the amps shipping prepaid (I also paid for shipping to me) for a refund of the original selling price. When all is done, we will lose $450 due to his poor packing.
2. That he gives my relative a $450 discount for the cosmetic damage. As with all high end equipments, cosmetic condition is very important for him. Let me put it this way, we wouldn't have paid half of their original selling price if the amps had a smashed foot and bent heatsinks. But giving back $450 would show that he cares and is a decent person.
I know there is no point in claiming damage with Fedex due to poor packing.
I would appreciate advice from inmates with similar experiences.
Thanks,
