In his book, The memoirs of Field-Marshal the Viscount Montgomery of Alamein, K.G., the author, Bernard Law Montgomery, (17 November 1887–24 March 1976), used the term "SOL" quite often. The Field-Marshal said it meant "soldier out of luck".
