The 1626 was designed for use as a RF oscillator and Class C (non-linear) amplifier. It's curves aren't even close to the triode-mode 12V6. That might be the difference you hear (distortion). I have to say, as a fan of both the 12V6 and 6BQ5 for SE use, I prefer these tubes in pentode mode. The nuance and dynamics in that mode are very, very good, with the 6BQ5 maybe having a slight edge. Either tube is difficult to improve on without spending much more time and money.
